Although its quite useful as a social tool, networking can also be detrimental to one's social skills. Although taking away that face-to-face contact may make social dealings easier, it won't prepare someone for real life. The amount of time that some people spend on the internet, checking and rechecking their personal pages, is not an effective use of anyone's time. Some people need to realize that these social networking sites are not just another way to live your life.
