Released in March, Windows Internet Explorer 8 is now available for download. The new browser, from Microsoft, includes many new and improved features.
After more than a year of beta testing, it’s official. The newest version of Internet Explorer, the popular browser from Microsoft, has been released in it's full version and is available for free download.
For those who prefer Internet Explorer as the browser of choice, IE8 offers many new features previous IE versions did not offer. For starters, the browser is reportedly much faster and safer than IE7 and is available in 25 languages. Just a few of the new-and-improved features are listed below.
Internet Explorer 8 Features:
Accelerators - The new IE accelerators allow users to quickly and easily access various online services such as blogs, email, mapping, translating and online searching without having to visit other websites. When words or phrases within a webpage are highlighted, an accelerator icon appears. Once the icon is clicked, various services and options appear on the user’s screen. The highlighted words or phrases can map with Live Maps integration, blog with Live Spaces, search, send to email accounts, translate and use Encarta to look up a definition. Users can also add and remove services to the list as well.
Web Slices – Another new feature of IE8, Web Slices, keeps track of updates and changes to a favorite website. Similar to “feeds”, users are automatically alerted when changes occur based on the user’s preferences. Users can preview the updates and changes without actually having to visit the specific sites by previewing them directly from the browser. The snippets or previews are located in the “Favorites” area of the browser. This is a great feature for weather, stocks, scores, EBay and news.
InPrivate Browsing – Users can shop and search in private with InPrivate Browsing. When the service is turned on, friends and family will be unable to track online whereabouts.
Automatic Crash Recovery – It is extremely frustrating when a browser unexpectedly crashes or shuts down without warning. Instead of wasting valuable time searching through the user's history or trying to remember a certain website, ACR recovers from annoying crashes and hangs by restoring the user's last browser session automatically.
Improved Search Functions – Along with search suggestions, users are able to add visual searches to traditional searching.
Security Features – Several new security features have been added to IE8. The SmartScreen Filter includes malware and automatic phishing protection in the new browser.
Compatibility View – With the simple click of the Compatibility View button, users will no longer have to suffer with website display issues. Just click the button and the site will display in the older IE7 mode. The next time the site is visited, it will automatically use the IE7 settings. To adjust the settings, click on “Tools” and “Compatibility Settings” to adjust.
Internet Explorer 8 System Requirements:
IE8 is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, Windows Server 2003 and 2008
Requires a 233 MHz processor
Windows XP requires 64 MB of memory and other operating systems require at least 128 MB and higher

For readers who use Firefox and may be new to IE8, I wanted your readers
to be aware that Firefox has a version of Accelerators too, it is called
“KALLOUT - Accelerators for Firefox” It’s available as a free add-on
through Firefox. See: http://bit.ly/vJKbW
I believe the
accelerators from MS and others will actually work directly with
KallOut-Accelerators for Firefox so users can stick with Firefox if they
want and still get the benefits of the community-developed accelerators.
There are some advantages to the Firefox browser.
