Revenue sharing content sites can make money, but some are more lucrative than others. Here's how you can maximize your income on the web.

According to Lindsay Wilcox in the July 14, 2007 NBC Dallas news story, “’How To’ Make Money From Home – Seriously,” it’s easy to make money at home writing short “how-to” pieces on the web. Wilcox tells the story of a Dallas mother who contributes to the website eHow whose clever slogan reads, “How to Do Just About Everything.”

Says Wilcox, “Since 2007, Candace has posted more than 250 articles on everything from 'How to Shave Your Legs Perfectly' to 'How to Make a Wedding Bouquet.' She pulls in about $200 a month - money that is generated from click-through ads placed along side of the articles.”

Wouldn’t it be great to generate residual monthly income by writing simple tutorials on the internet? As these sites become more popular, more people are jumping on the bandwagon. However, not all paid content websites are cut from the same mold – some are more lucrative, and others don’t make much money at all. Here’s how to choose the ones that generate the most revenue.

Best Revenue Sharing Paid Content Websites

Sites that offer writers a cut of the overall advertising revenue are growing in number and popularity. The aforementioned eHow is one of the best places on the internet to generate income by writing short “how-to” tutorials. It’s great for people who are wary about writing longer pieces, but can handle authoring short “chunks” of information. Should the writer hit on several popular how-to topics, a good deal of money can be made.

Helium is a great website to begin writing on the web and to polish writing style. The site has a number of topics to choose from and includes a unique Marketplace that connects writers and publishers. However, Helium recently dropped upfront payments for all but new titles, and the revenue share is far less than other content sites.

Associated Content offers revenue sharing and upfront payments for a wide range of media including text, video, slideshows, and podcasts. However they are very news oriented and can be choosy about the types of articles accepted.

The most lucrative revenue sharing website for more experienced writers is Suite101. While it pays the most, writers work one-on-one with editors and must be able to deal with frequent issues regarding SEO and content structure. On the other hand, they will learn all there is to know about the world of SEO. A resume summary and two writing samples are required.

The Truth About Money-Making Article Sites

Before registering with any paid content website, the writer must keep several things in mind. First and foremost, monthly revenue is rarely stable. Depending on how search engines index the author’s articles, some months may be gangbusters while others languish. Sometimes a piece can generate only a few views at first, then it appears on the first page of a search engine and gets hundreds of views, then reverts back to only a few hits per day.

Article success is also based on a number of other factors. It helps to have a good working knowledge of search engine optimization (SEO) to encourage search spiders to index the piece. Some websites including Suite101 require writers to learn SEO and effectively implement keywording. And although most page views are generated from Google searches, it helps to market articles on social sites including Twitter and Facebook.

Other revenue sharing paid content websites such as Bukisa, Triond, and Squidoo can generate extra income. However, no one site will substitute a monthly salary unless the person has been writing diligently on a number of sites for several years.
