YouTube's slogan is Broadcast Yourself. Thousands of people world wide do just that each and every day. What are the positives and negatives that go with such exposure?

The popularity of YouTube has grown to incredible proportions. With literally hundreds of thousands of videos viewed each day, the small video sharing site dreamed up by three former PayPal employees has blossomed into a site that sees more individual page view traffic than Google (according to Alexa traffic rankings).

The ability for anyone to easily create and upload a video to YouTube has made it a place for anyone, young or old, to have a chance at becoming an instant celebrity. Such viral digital videos have made it en vogue to use YouTube to Broadcast Yourself to the world. Some of the more entertaining videos have taken on a life of their own over the years, being retold and parodied thousands of times by media outlets as serious as Dateline to as outrageous as South Park. How does a person create and publish a video on YouTube? Broadcasting yourself to the world has never been so easy!

How To Create The Next Viral YouTube.com Video:

Creating a video is often the easiest and most fun part of the process. Using a hand held video camera, cell phone camera, or a web cam a person records a video and then loads that video data into a computer. Using any of the free or commercial video editing software the video is edited, titles are added, and other changes are made.

The video is then uploaded to the YouTube.com server where it is automatically converted into a format that is appropriate for use on the Internet. Industry experts often suggest that, if possible, video should be captured at 30 frames per second so that when YouTube or other video sharing sites convert the file down to the standard 15 frames per second the image quality and fluidity will be as lifelike as possible. Once the video is uploaded the entire world will be able to view it, comment on it, and add links to it on their own web sites.

What Are The Drawbacks To Broadcasting Yourself To The World?

Like anything else on the Internet, once a file is posted it is impossible to get it back. While on the whole using YouTube to broadcast yourself and your activities can be a good thing there are also many examples of bad people using YouTube to damage or even maliciously destroy another person's reputation or career. In general most of these negative displays have been created by teenagers or others that have not fully considered the consequences of their actions.

Disgruntled students have taunted and teased their teachers into displays of anger, recorded the exchange, and uploaded the video to YouTube for a laugh. Others have staged physical attacks on other students and recorded the beating all in an attempt to have their fifteen seconds of fame. Many of these misguided attempts at achieving fame result in disciplinary action or even criminal prosecution.

What YouTube Video Will Go Viral Next?

There is no way to tell what YouTube video will become so popular that it makes it to the national stage. Sadly some of the best videos on YouTube never get the recognition that they deserve. That fact should not discourage anyone from attempting to use YouTube however. YouTube's motto of "Broadcast Yourself" is a great way to show off a talent or float a new idea. The process can be a lot of fun and if done right, can make someone very famous.
