Features and Review of the Popular Downloadable Apple Browser

Safari 3.1, the popular web browser from Apple, is now available as a free download for both Windows and Mac platforms.

The browser, touted as the “World’s Best Browser”, claims to be faster than any other web browser today. Originally released as a beta version, Safari 3.1, an improvement from the beta version, is now available as a full version. Safari's interface is clean and simple and provides more "real estate" area for users than other browsers offer. For those familiar with Apple's iTunes, Safari's menu bar is strikingly similar.

Features:

  • Bookmarks - Bookmarks from other browsers are automatically imported into Safari during installation and setup

  • Pop-Up Blocker -Safari automatically blocks annoying pop-up’s

  • Search Bar - Google search bar is automatically included and installed within the browser.

  • Inline Find -The “Find” feature, located beneath the Google search box, is a valuable feature of this browser. To use, type in a word and “search”. If any words are located, the webpage is dimmed and the matched words are highlighted within the interface. The total number of matched words is displayed next to the Find bar.

  • Tabs - Tabbed browsing is also available and includes some nifty features. Rearrange the windows by dragging to different locations or to merge into one window. By right clicking, all opened tabs can be bookmarked at once. To open a new tab, click “Ctrl-T” or double-click on am empty area of the tab bar.

  • Activity - To view recent browsing activity, click the “Window” button on the menu bar, and “Activity”.

  • Private Browsing - With Private Browsing turned on, users can search the Internet without being tracked. Cookies, history and filled in forms will not be stored or displayed. To turn on Private Browsing, click “Edit” and “Private Browsing”.

  • Forms Auto Fill - Safari will automatically fill in forms with information from users address book or previous forms.

  • Resizable Text - Another feature included in Safari is the ability to adjust the size of text by simply dragging the corners of any given area.

  • Spelling and Grammar - This is another handy feature. To turn on the grammar and spelling checker, click “Edit” on the menu bar, and click the spelling and grammar options.

  • Reopen Windows - This is a beneficial feature for those who searching the Internet. In case of browser failure, by clicking ”History” and “Reopen all Windows from Last Session”, each window that was previously open will reopen. Users no longer have to waste time searching through recent browsing history trying to remember the address of a particular website.

  • Snap Back - This is another unique feature in Safari. When numerous pages are open, it can be aggravating and time consuming to click the “back” button to locate that specific page. With Snap Back, that problem is alleviated.

  • Plug-In’s - Numerous Windows plug-ins are available including Quick Time, Flash, Adobe Reader, Java, Real Player and Windows Media Player.

  • RSS - By clicking the RSS icon, users are able to receive instant updates without leaving the browser by bookmarking the news feed.

  • Bonjour - Bonjour technology is integrated into the browser.

Cons:

  • Users can email page links only, not entire webpage
  • No new tab button
  • Some users report clarity issues

  • Available for Mac and Windows platforms
