The Internet is a valuable resource. Students no longer have to rely solely on outdated information previously available only at the local library or educational institution. Today, handy homework tools, informative reference guides and a vast array of educational resources are readily available with the simple click of the mouse.
The following websites provide many helpful resources, reference guides and homework tools for students.
Dictionaries and Encyclopedias for Students
- Britannica Online – Encyclopedia Britannica has been a trusted source of information since the 1700s! The company developed the first online encyclopedia in the 1980s. And in 2002, the Britannica Online School Edition was launched, designed specifically for elementary and secondary school-age students. Categories include History & Society, Arts & Entertainment and Science & Technology. Featured videos and blog also included on the site.
- Biographical Dictionary – Launched in 1997, this biographical website from S9 is touted as being one of the largest on the planet! This Wikipedia-style dictionary includes biographies that are categorized by nationality, alphabet or category. A challenge section is also included to test users’ knowledge of historical and current personalities.
- Giraffian – The Children’s Illustrated Picture Dictionary & Encyclopedia is a combination of an online dictionary and wiki and is geared towards younger children. Information is provided in a fun and educational manner, using images. A new simple photographic dictionary is now a part of the site. Worksheets, activities and online books are also available.
Literature Guides and Resources
- Bartleby – Looking for a book? Launched in 1993 as a personal research experiment, Bartleby is an electronic text archive of classic books that are out of copyright or are current reference books. This helpful online collection includes fiction, nonfiction, verse and references at no cost to users.
- Bibliomania – This website offers a plethora of world literature information in a clean and simple interface. Free electronic books, stories, plays, articles and poems are available at no cost. Students can read and discuss the stories online. Helpful study guides and research areas are also available. Although the site is not actively maintained, former employees are keeping the site running.
- CummingsStudyGuides Net – For in-depth information on world literature, CummingsStudyGuides is a valuable resource. There are study guides on poems, essays and plays. The information is complied by former English instructor and freelance writer, Michael J. Cummings.
Online Converters and Calculators
- OnlineConversion - This helpful resource can convert almost any type of measurement or unit a person needs. Weight, temperature, areas, angles, astronomical units, cooking, speed, torque and light conversions are just a few of the many categories that are offered. And just for fun, why not convert human years into dog years or get help with picking out the winning numbers in the lottery?
- MartindaleCenter – This website offers a plethora of helpful online calculators. More than 23,000 calculators and spreadsheets on a wide variety of subjects are listed. Topics on the site include agriculture, mathematics, chemistry, physics, financial and geosciences.Over 3,500 manuals, courses and handbooks are also available.
Miscellaneous Reference Guides
- Archives.gov – The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) provides all sorts of important records from the United States Government. From the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights to the Declaration of Independence, historical documents are readily available with the simple click of the mouse. Some records are available at no cost, some require payment.
- RefDesk – Launched in 1995, RefDesk is an award-winning website that is one of the top sites in the world. RefDesk provides fast access to comprehensive content and includes a variety of search engines, homework helpers for college-aged students and a credible fact checker.
- World Lecture Hall - This website, for university-level students, is created by faculty and includes a listing of pages of courseware materials. For higher education students interested or curious about a particular course, the site provides information on courses in 83 categories of study. World Lecture Hall does not require registration.
- iTools – This website is a one-stop-shop for all kinds of information. The site allows users to search for almost anything in a variety of categories. The language tools include dictionary, word lookup, text translators, scrabble and crossword solvers. Search tools include websearch, newsgroups, people search, telephone area codes and video search information. And finally, the research tools include currency converters, biography, quotations, trademark search, newspaper and magazine lookups.
