Freepoverty, Facebook, Geosense and other websites offer geography games and opportunities to test and improve world geography general knowledge online for free.

Playing free online geography games and quizzes makes it easy for anyone to improve their knowledge of world maps. Learning about the location of capital and major cities, countries, continents and flags can be fun as well as educational.

Facebook: Geo Challenge

The Geo Challenge application tests knowledge of flags, the shape of countries and the location of major cities on a world map.

The game has three 60-second challenges where players must match suitcases bearing flags to the correct country name, map outlines with the correct country from a list, and locate major cities on a world map.

Points are given for both the speed and accuracy of answers. Hints are given if an answer is not made quickly, although reduced points are then allocated for a correct answer. Players are able to compare their scores with other friends using the same application.

Facebook: Traveller IQ Challenge

Posing the question “How well do you know your world?”, the Traveller IQ Challenge application offers a range of quizzes to test knowledge of countries, major and capital cities and world flags.

Players begin must achieve a certain number of points by the end of each round to qualify for the next level. An ongoing Traveller IQ score is maintained. Players are able to compare their results with friends and other Facebook users of the application.

Game play settings can be adjusted to English, Chinese or Japanese.

Freepoverty.com, Freerice.com and Freeflour.com

These charity-focused general knowledge game websites combine quizzes on a variety of subjects with donations to worthwhile charities. Funding for donations comes from advertising revenue for the websites.

  • Freepoverty.com – players must locate a major city on a world map given the city name and country. The number of cups of water donated increases with accuracy, ranging from one to ten cups.
  • Freerice.com – previously a simple vocabulary quiz, Freerice.com now offers quizzes on a variety of subjects including geography. Each correct answer equals 20 grains of rice.
  • Freeflour.com – players are asked a series of geography questions with correct answers earning a spoonful of flour. Questions relate to capital and major cities, landmarks and oceans. Unlike the freepoverty.com and freerice.com, players must register their email address for their score to be tracked between visits and there are regular questions during the quiz advertising products.

Geosense.net

Players must locate a specific town on a world map given a town name and country. Points are awarded based on the accuracy of the guess. With each question, players are given the number of points received and time taken to answer, an ongoing points tally and the number of kilometres off the correct answer. The correct location is also indicated on the map.

At the end of each game, players are given statistics showing their score, average points per answer, average number of kilometres off the correct location and average time taken to answer. Players can choose to register and log-in or play as a guest. A list of high scores is maintained by the site.

Test Your Geography Knowledge

This collection of geography quizzes offers opportunities to test knowledge of countries, world oceans, capital cities, states, territories and provinces both on a world map and on maps of the various continents. Ideal for students learning geography, players can choose from more than 35 different quizzes to test their knowledge of a specific country, continent or region.

Make Learning Geography Fun

With many students finding it difficult to memorize cities, states and countries on a world map, these educational online geography games offer a fun alternative. Students and adults can improve their geography knowledge by regularly taking these online geography quizzes or even add the extra incentive of challenging a friend.
