Many people dream of becoming a freelance writer. Besides traditional writing, the Internet provides another viable option for fulfilling that dream. Writing on the web can be a great way to earn extra money or make a living.
Google recently unveiled a highly anticipated new project called Google Knols, a free informational and interactive service currently in beta. Somewhat similar to Wikipedia, Knols, short for “units of knowledge” are articles that are written on specific subjects by named writers or “authors.”
According to Google’s official release, “The key principle behind Knol is authorship. Every Knol will have an author (or group of authors) who put their name behind their content. It’s their Knol, their voice, their opinion. We expect that there will be multiple Knols on the same subject, and we think that is good.”
Writing Google Knols
- Anyone can write Knols as long as they are knowledgeable about the subject matter.
- Authors can write about almost any topic they choose. The content policy states some topics are not allowed including pornography and violent content.
- Authors are encouraged to create a biography, including real name and credentials.
- Authors can write the article alone or collaborate with other writers.
- Knol writers have full control over each article.
- The articles are not edited.
- Google hosts the articles and provides the web-authoring tools.
- Although the opinion of the author is important, it is important to note Knols are not blogs. A conversational voice is not recommended as Knols are authoritative in nature.
- There are no minimum or maximum word requirements.
Knols are Interactive
- Google encourages interaction between the writer and reader.
- Google Knols includes “moderated collaboration” which allows readers to contribute to the Knol by offering suggestions to the article. It is the author’s discretion whether or not to accept, edit or decline any suggestions. Readers are also able to add comments, questions, rate and review the Knols.
A Fun Collaboration
Google and the New Yorker Magazine are collaborating on this project. Each Knol writer can include one cartoon from the New Yorker Magazine archives in an article. As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Earn Money
Knol authors earn money by including AdSense for Content advertising in articles.
How to Start
- Setup is simple. In order to write a Knol, users must first register.
- Select a user name to begin.
- Select “Write a New Knol” to start.
- Enter title, subtitle and article.
- Set permissions and copyright settings.
- Publish the artlcle.
