A partnership between Cox Communications, the National for Missing and Exploited Children, NCMEC, and John Walsh is bringing important information to parents in a variety of ways. Walsh, host of the popular America’s Most Wanted, will host a LIVE online safety webcast on Wednesday, July 23, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. Eastern.

A recent survey conducted by Cox Communications and the NCMEC, found both positive and negative results. Approximately 1000 children between the ages of 13 and 17 were polled in the 2007 survey.

The Teen Internet Safety Survey Wave II Results:

  • 71% of those polled had online profiles on a social networking site(s)
  • Of those, almost half had public profiles which allows anyone, including strangers, to view the information
  • 58% of children included the name of their city in their profile
  • 8% published their cell phone number
  • Almost two-thirds of children polled included photographs or videos of themselves
  • 49% of those polled reported they were not concerned about future ramifications for posting personal information online
  • 25% reported their parents knew little or nothing about what they do online
  • 41% stated their parents discuss online safety “a lot” with them
  • 57% reported they ignore messages from strangers

As the study suggests, children continue to publish personal information online and most are not concerned about posting the information on the Internet. On a positive note, the study also found parents are indeed talking to their children about the potential online risks and concerns they may face online. Parents who talk to their children about online safety issues reduce exposure to potential risks and risky behavior online.
