An overview of how to use the Internet for personal gain. Tips on higher earnings, where to find genuine sites and basic tips to avoid scams.

The Internet, for many of us, is fascinating and holds the key to a plethora of knowledge. It can also be used as a source of income. Sometimes, though, we do not know where to start looking or we are fooled by scammers. This is intended to be a basic guide for those who are looking for genuine earnings on line.

How Much Can I Earn?

I am going to begin with this question because it tends to be the one asked first and most often. The honest answer is that, unless you intend to invest your own money and, potentially, an awful lot of time, then you will not earn a lot, at least in the beginning. Some sites offer extra incentives, such as referrals or competitions, where it is possible to earn a little more.

Most genuine sites only offer cash in rates of cents. I have personally tested those claiming to pay large sums and, as expected, they did not pay out once redemption level was reached.

How Do I Know a Site is Genuine?

All of the links provided below are to sites which I use myself. I will indicate next to each one which have actually paid so far.

When looking for further sites to earn on line, it is important to be sure that they are not scams. There are a few rules which may help when deciding which sites to use:

* Never, ever pay money to join a site. Genuine on line earning sites will not require a payment to sign up.

* Do not sign up to sites which require a number of referrals before you can earn. Some genuine sites do offer referral bonuses but this will not be a necessity.

* If unsure, try to find other people who have used the sites before. You can ask family and friends or ask on trusted forums.

* Do not be fooled by claims of high earnings. Genuine sites will not offer you thousands of dollars for clicking a link.

* Whatever you are looking for, never pay money to go to more sites. I would also advise that you do not use those "First Name/Email Address" sites because they will inundate you with spam and anything genuine you find on them can be found elsewhere.

What Sort of "Work" Can I Do Online?

There are several different types of activity which offers a cash incentive.

1. PTC/PTR: These Paid to Click and Paid to Read sites are often preferred by beginners as they are easy to use and require very little effort to get started. However, there appear to be an awful lot of them. The first rule of these sites is that, the more they pay, the more likely they are to be a scam. A genuine PTC/PTR will usually pay no more than $1 per click although the average is usually less than 1 cent per click.

2. Writing: There are a few good writing sites about. My current favourite being Helium.com where you write articles about pretty much anything and offer them into the Helium world where they are rated and earn on their quality. That particular site also has a Market Place where you can offer good quality articles on specific subjects to independent publishers who will pay a given amount should they choose to purchase your article. There is a scam going about which offers writing jobs but asks to pay to join. Some of them say "free" jobs but you have to sign up to themselves for giving you the links. To earn on a writing site, it is important that you're submissions of a good quality. Some sites accept both factual and creative writing but others only take one or the other. Then there are other sites for reviews where, depending on the site, you can write reviews on anything you want. Some review sites will have a list of things they want you to write about or may ask to send you products to review.

3. Discussion/Review: On these sites, you can get paid to voice an opinion. Again, just as with article writing, quality counts more than quantity.

4. Music Reviews: As the most important part of the music industry, fans are being asked to rate and review new music. Artists need a showcase and, of course, the Internet is fulfilling this role. Music reviews involve listening to a track (usually chosen at random by the site) and offering comments on it. You don't need experience. All you need is to enjoy music and to know what you like.

How to Get Started/Sources

You can follow these links to genuine earnings.

www.helium.com (Writing site where you can earn by writing quality articles about anything. The minimum cash-out balance is $25. This site has paid me via Pay Pal)

www.mylot.com/pumpkinjam (Discussion site where you can earn by contributing facts and opinions to discussions or create new discussion. The minimum pay-out is $10 but can be set to a higher amount in your account settings if requested. This site also requires Pay Pal and has paid me regularly)

http://www.clicksalary.com/pages/index.php?refid=pumpkinjam (This is a PTC site although there are other earning opportunities such as contests, Paid to Promote and referral centre. There is no minimum pay-out and the site pays weekly. They have paid me via Pay Pal and they also accept E-Gold accounts)

www.slicethepie.com (This is a music review site. To earn on this, you need to "scout" where you are given tracks to listen to and are required to rate them and give a fair review. There is also an option to sign up as an artist to showcase your work. This site has, so far, not paid me but the pay out is £10)

http://wwhttp://earnmoneyonlinetoo.blogspot.com/ (This is the link to a site where you can find more earning opportunities. All of them genuine and free to sign up).
