March 17th marks the annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Who was Patrick and how did the yearly St. Patrick's Day holiday begin?

History:

It’s been said that Maewyn was a wee lad who led anything but a boring life. Born in Wales in 385 to a well-to-do family, he was sold into slavery by pirates at a young age until he escaped years later. Those years as a slave led him to be a devoted Christian. For the next 12 years, he studied in a monastery. It was during this time he knew he wanted to convert non-believers to Christianity. Changing his name to Patrick, he was appointed as second bishop to Ireland and traveled extensively throughout the land He set up churches and schools in Ireland for 30 years until he retired. Patrick died on March 17th, 461, and St. Patrick’s Day was established.

Legend has it, Patrick raised people from the dead and drove all the snakes from Ireland. Patrick also used the shamrock in his sermons, demonstrating the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Patrick became the patron saint of Ireland.

Today, we celebrate this special day in a variety of ways. From parades and drinking green beverages, to the silly kissing stones or pinching people who don't wear green, St. Patrick's Day is a fun-filled day for many. This year, send a free electronic greeting to friends and family to celebrate March 17th.
