Crime Reports is a highly interactive and innovative resource tool for registered users.
Years ago, Greg Whisenant mistakenly allowed a known burglar into his apartment building in Virginia. At the time, he wondered why criminal information and technology were not combined in order to provide valuable information to citizens. For Greg, that question became the inspiration for a new website, Crime Reports.
Launched last year, CrimeReports is an easy-to-use website that provides criminal activity and police data on a Google map overlay. Users are able to view crime data, including locations of arrests and various police calls, in near real-time.
Once registered, users can search from a variety of criteria. Select specific dates, distances or specific types of criminal activity. From homicides and vehicle thefts, to robberies and assaults, all types of neighborhood criminal activity are now available with a simple click of the mouse. Sex offender information is also included.
Crime Alerts offers another valuable tool for registered users of Crime Reports. Users are able to save crime search profiles and receive area crime reports. Crime prevention, community policing information and crime alerts are available to registered users through email as they become available. For example, an email is sent to the user If a sexual assault has occurred close to a users home or school.
For people considering moving or relocating, Crime Reports provides a valuable resource for those concerned with criminal activity in the new location.
Although Crime Reports is a free service for the general public, police agencies are charged subscription fees that range from $49 to $199 per month. Law enforcement agencies submit criminal information to the Crime Reports Publisher. The data is then displayed within 24 hours to registered users in a simple and straight-forward map overlay interface. Launched last year, Crime Reports is expanding nationally. Currently the service is provided only in 17 American states and not all areas are included.
In order to protect victims, personal information including names and exact addresses, are not included in the online data.
Crime Reports, owned by Public Engines, was founded in 2006. Whisenant sits at the helm as President and CEO of the Utah based company.
