In 1909, Sonora Louis Smart Dodd wanted to do something special for her father, William Smart, a Civil War veteran. Sonora’s mother died during childbirth which left William alone to raise a newborn and five children. Sonora wanted to honor her dad, and his birthday, which was the first Sunday in June, would be the perfect opportunity. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in Washington, in 1910. Soon, other cities and towns joined the celebration. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson declared the third Sunday in June, Father’s Day.
