EBook Compilers for Writers

HTML and PDF Creators for Electronic Books

May 24, 2009 Jace Shoemaker-Galloway

Many writers use HTML or PDF compilers to write an electronic book, or EBooks. Finding just the right compiler to fit a writer's needs, can be a daunting task.

The Internet provides the opportunity and means for writers to publish their own works. Electronic books, or EBooks, are an affordable and easy alternative to traditional publishing. In fact, anyone can write and publish an EBook. But once the premise of the book and title has been chosen and the book has been written, then what? How does someone actually produce an EBook?

A specific type of software is needed to create electronic books; an EBook compiler or creator. A compiler takes the text of the book and combines it into an easy to distribute single executable file. There are many compilers that are readily available. Some compilers are free and some are not. Selecting the right compiler depends on several important factors; specific operating system, preferred security features, bandwidth issues, preferred format, marketing needs, support and other factors.

EBooks are written in several different formats including HyperText Markup Language, HTML, and Portable Document File, PDF. Each particular format has both advantages and disadvantages. Determining what format best suits the writer’s needs is an important first step in creating the EBook.
