Dreamspark Offers No-Cost Professional Level Programs for Students

Microsoft is offering a brand new initiative, DreamSpark, a suite of professional level developer software to college students, for free.

Software giant, Microsoft, is offering a suite of valuable programs to college students, at no cost! Students interested in gaming, software or programming development and design now have the comprehensive tools and the means to further their technology skills.

Beginning this week, Microsoft is offering professional-level software for university students, worldwide, through the DreamSpark initiative. Currently, the free software is available to students in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, China, Germany, France, Finland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Belgium. Additional countries will follow in the months ahead.

Students may choose one product, or all of the following titles:

  • Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition
  • Expression Studio which includes Expression Web, Expression Blend, Expression Design and Expression Media
  • Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
  • XNA Game Studio 2.0 for aspiring game developers which also includes XNA Creators Club 12-Month Trial Subscription

How it works:

  • Users must have a Windows LIVE ID account (Signing up is free and easy)
  • Personal information is not shared with Microsoft
  • Once verified, students may begin downloading the free software. Some downloads include ISO files. See specific instructions for help.
  • Single-use license keys are included in each file or users are directed to a specific link
  • Students are allowed to download and install only one copy of each product

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Students must be enrolled in an accredited higher-educational institution
  • Windows LIVE ID assists in the college verification process
  • Students must be currently enrolled in an accredited university, college, community college or junior college with digital student credentials
  • Currently, not all schools are listed. Click “contact us” to be added to the listing of schools.

Verification Process:

  • Verification process is simple and takes just moments to complete
  • Each student must be verified prior to continuing with process
  • Select user continent and location
  • Select source (school, organization or student ID) from list
  • Enter username and password
  • Verification process occurs only once; when first signing up then again after 12 months if renewed
  • Once verified, students keep DreamSpark for 12 months with option to renew after initial 12 month period has expired

Computer Requirements:

  • Windows Vista (except Starter Edition)
  • Windows XP operating systems
  • 1024 x 768 or higher-resolution display
  • QuickTime 7.1.5 or later
  • DVD-ROM Drive

Users agree software is intended for non-commercial use only.
