MySpace is a Social Networking Website where the user can register and obtain a personal profile page. The main purpose of MySpace is to allow communication with friends and serve a large community with music-related information. To create a nice, unique profile that looks great, it is a good idea to change the default settings of items appearing on the page, for example:
User information and images may be placed anywhere desired on the profile page. However, to hide or move any item, it is essential to apply HTML code. The reader may be pleased to learn that it is not a requirement to have a detailed understanding of HTML as scripts may be copied from supplier websites such as Myspace Gens and Create Blog and pasted into the Edit Profile. There is a menu of scripts available for the user to choose from. A visit to Create Blog provides an example how to access the code:
With frequent usage, the user may begin to understand the functon of the HTML, and making changes soon becomes routine and easy to learn. Editing code scripts allow further flexibility to achieving suitable page designs such as colours, width, height, font style, gap spaces and special effects.
When copying and pasting code, as explained above, most imported scripts include embedded advertising in the code from the original website. Removing this part of the code is simple but one needs to recognize what the advertising code looks like. As an example, the code script in Figure 2, taken from Free Fever, is intended to hide a user’s friends’ list. Note, the advertising code usually appears at the bottom of the script and has been highlighted in red in Figure 2. This part of the code also includes image references and the website URL.
A Layout is the term used to mean a pre-made Myspace profile page. Some websites provide access to such layouts and allow copying the code needed to paste into MySpace. For example, the Ms Premade website supplies a large range of themes. Included in these layouts are chosen colors, images, tables, etc.
Sometimes the user needs to edit pre-made profiles that have been imported into MySpace, and this is where knowing something about basic HTML would be useful.
A common user need is to change the background of the profile page with an image. This image can be stored anywhere on the web and only the URL is needed. To enable an image as background, the code shown in Figure 3 should be copied into the section ‘About Me’ located in the Edit Profile page.
A few common tips & tricks to enhance a personal profile page are shown in Figure 4.
The user with a standard profile page on MySpace can expect a very basic design. With a little knowledge of HTML, the profile page can be transformed into a spectacular look-and-feel. Some websites make available a vast range of HTML code scripts that may assist and may easily be inserted into profile pages.
