FreeRice, FreePoverty and FreeFlour offer internet users the chance to donate to those in need while they brush up on their vocab and general knowledge.

Editor's Choice

Many internet users regularly play online games while procrastinating or filling in time. The following sites offer a variety of quizzes and word games that benefit not only the user but also a variety of charitable organisations.

Freerice.com

Originally a simple multiple-choice vocabulary quiz, Freerice.com now offers a range of quiz topics to enable players to improve their general knowledge whilst contributing to a worthy cause. Players can choose from a range of subjects including:

  • Art – Famous paintings
  • Chemistry – Chemical Symbols (basic)
  • Chemistry – Chemical Symbols (full list)
  • English – English Grammar
  • English – English Vocabulary
  • Geography – Identify Countries on the Map
  • Geography – World Capitals
  • Language – French
  • Language – German
  • Language – Italian
  • Language – Spanish
  • Math – Multiplication Table

Funding for 20 grains of rice is donated to the United Nations World Food Program for each correct answer. Since it began on 7th October 2007, Freerice.com has donated more than 46,328,625,790 grains of rice. This has been distributed to several countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Cambodia, Bhutan and Nepal.

Freepoverty.com

Freepoverty.com tests knowledge of world geography while offering an opportunity to donate cups of water to needy communities. Given the name of a city and country, players must accurately pinpoint the city on the world map provided within approximately ten seconds. Players are then awarded between one to ten cups of water depending on the accuracy of their answer.

At the time of publishing, the site records a total donation for all players of more than 51,500,000 cups of water since the site began.

Founded by Chung-Guk Kim, Freepoverty.com has previously donated advertising revenue to WaterAid. This arrangement has been terminated and Freepoverty.com is currently seeking an alternate organisation or charity to receive the donation.

Freeflour.com

This geography quiz site rewards correct answers with one spoonful of flour. Donations are made to multiple charities to provide food for the hungry and to facilitate getting food supplies to those in need. Specific charities are not listed on the site. A relatively new site, Freeflour.com donated 526,367 in August and September 2008, which equates to 5263 loaves of bread.

A variety of geography-related multiple-choice questions are asked. Unlike Freerice.com and Freepoverty.com, periodically advertising questions are asked with players given the option of simply returning to the quiz rather than answering.

Charitii.com

Another new charity puzzle site, Charitii.com tests vocabulary and general knowledge with multiple choice questions.

Charitii.com allows players to choose which charity they would prefer their correct answers to benefit. Four options are given:

  • Charity: water – donating 10 ounces of drinking water
  • Care (food) – donating 10 grains of wheat
  • Oaktree Foundation (education) – 10 minutes of schooling for a child
  • The Nature Conservancy (Rainforest) – save 10 square inches of rainforest land

With the launched only recently on 26th August 2008, donations for August and September have included 320,340 ounces of water, 5,540 grains of wheat, 13,710 minutes of education and 20,760 square inches of rainforest.

Improve General Knowledge and Support Worthwhile Charities

These sites offer regular internet users the opportunity to not only improve their vocabulary and general knowledge skills, but also to make contributions to worthwhile charities through the donation programs implemented by each website.

School students in particular may benefit not only from taking the quizzes, but by reading the background information on the sites to increase their global awareness. Some schools are using the programs as fun activities during allocated classroom computer time.

By regularly visiting these websites and recommending them to friends, the financial contributions to the various charities will increase.

I like these games because they give people a nice way to do something. But then these games should also work. I just tried out the Free Flour game and it tried to tell me that the leaning tower of Pisa is in Monaco and that the capital of Afghanistan is New Delhi. Out of 20 questions I think 17 were answered incorrectly by the computer.

Why do they do this? I know I wouldn't like to return to a site that doesn't work anyway. People are already low on motivation and trust where it comes to charity and awareness. This does not inspire confidence, nor does it inspire activism.

I think it's a shame!

Perhaps it was a one off technical glitch? I have just rechecked FreeFlour.com and had no problems whatsoever.

Hi!

Very interesting article, I would like to add another website, which has free flash games and they donate money to charity: http://www.clickforachange.com

They have a progress bar on the homepage, so you can see how they are progressing!

I knew of Freerice and poverty.com, but was excited to learn of the others. I offer these "game" options to my high school students I teach for when they are done with lessons. They are learning or challenging themselves AND helping the world! Every little bit counts!!!!
