Starting back in the late 1800s, Labor Day was observed in various American cities until President Grover Cleveland proclaimed Labor Day a national holiday in 1894. The United States and Canada observe this special day the first Monday of each September.
Labor Day is unofficially observed as the “end of summer." Many celebrate the day with family, picnics, barbecue's, pool parties and a day of rest, relaxation and respite from work. After the Labor Day holiday, many children head back to school.
