Having been a fan of blogs for the last year or so, it finally came time to give in and start one. Here's some tips and tricks to creating a blog that really fits.

Blogs always seemed like something so self indulgent. Something people did because they had too much time on their hands or because they wanted the world to know what they thought. Blogs seemed so phony, so flash-in-the-pan. But when the search results on Google Images started coughing up more and more blogs, they suddenly became a bit clearer.

Most people who search for images get inundated with blog-specific results. Often times model or designer searches lead to a plethora of blogs that have an endless supply of fabulous images from sources around the world. It's these results that show blogs are more than a way for people to have their own space, but a place where people with common interests can come together to give and take.

Pictures, magazine articles and off-the-street images from places like Australia, New York and Paris can instantly be shared with little old blog-o here all the way in Toronto...and vice versa. It's amazing the rate at which content goes up, knowledge is shared, and beauty appreciated.

A Blog is Born - Tommy Ton

Oakville, Ontario's Tommy Ton started a fashion phenomenon with his blog Jak & Jil which features countless images of Ton's obsession - shoes! In a March 2009 article in the Toronto Star Ton is quoted as saying, "I realized the power of blogging when I posted a photo of Kate Lanphear's wrist. People contacted me and wanted to see more photos of the bangles on her wrist." He continues, "It's ridiculous but I understand them completely. They are living vicariously through my blog."

Ton, who still resides in Oakville with his parents, was recently flown to Paris to shoot the Lord and Taylor campaign after the Asian superpower liked the look of his blog. In the Star article he explains that up until that point he'd only been working on his blog for three months and by no means a trained fashion photographer. He explains to writer David Graham, "They wanted the images to look like my blog."

Spreading the Word on Blogs

Word of mouth is another great power behind the success of certain blogs over others. One magazine, one website promotes a new blog and people catch on quickly. Sites like Style.com or the Cobra Snake are essentially albums of day-to-day events that allow every girl/boy/culture-freak to have access.

Blogs have brought the world even closer and made fashion shows and events instantaneous to the public. People no longer have to wait for the next day's paper or the weekend gossip column, they can log on to their favourite site and find up to the minute coverage, candid photos and a plethora of images as opposed to the one or two chosen for publication in the mags.

There's so many blogs online covering interests well beyond the realm of fashion. There's sports blogs, tech blogs and some that are more personal journals than image banks.

No matter what your interests, there's bound to be a blog that fits.

Get Inspired - Creating a Blog

Digging deeper into the blogging world may inspire some to start their own as it did here. Creating a blog can also provide a sense of comfort for some - knowing their favourite images and articles can be found on one site no matter where they are or what computer they're on.

It's a virtual bank of information and though some may not choose to share theirs with the masses, others are sure to dive right in and wear their blog on their sleeve!
