This article discusses the pros and cons of PLR articles, and how to use them effectively in web content creation projects.

This article discusses the pros and cons of private label rights articles, in which the right to use them passes from the author to the web content creator, along with the right to republish them. The main points covered are:

  • a description of what PLR actually is;
  • how to use PLR in original web content;
  • some important points relating to the use and sourcing of PLR.

Firstly, with the ongoing popularity of PLR articles on the forums and as part of sales drives, it is useful to look at what PLR articles actually are in some detail.

What are Private Label Rights Articles

Private Label Rights articles, otherwise known as PLR, are pieces of text created specifically around a keyword title or topic. Ideally, they are little breakdowns of the salient facts relating to a niche topic (or even sub-niche topic) which are often offered with no licensing restrictions.

Despite the name PLR, this is not necessarily the case, so it pays to read the terms and conditions attached to the PLR collection. For example, it is usual that the PLR owner only gives the right to use extracts, and not to use the work verbatim, except as part of a collection designed to be distributed as a collection of articles.

This prevents the pieces appearing alongside each other in search engine results pages (SERPs), which would defeat the object of the exercise : to provide almost unlimited content for web site owners, produced by niche experts.

They are also not always free. There is often no distinguishable difference in quality between paid PLR and free PLR collections. Like everything else on the Internet, it's often a case of trial, error, and research on the forums.

How to use PLR Articles

PLR articles are designed to be rewritten, and not necessarily used as-is. If they are part of a free PLR collection, then the web content creator using them should certainly re-write them as there will usually be a certain proportion of lazy content creators who will just copy and paste them into a blog entry, with a few Google AdWords adverts in a side panel.

That's not an effective way to use them.

The effective way to use them is to rewrite each one, taking the facts as presented, and augmenting them with a little extra research to give value to the visitor. They'll be more likely to click on the adverts that surround them, they will have trust in the content creator, and everyone will benefit.

This is just one important point to remember about using PLR articles, paid or free.

Some Important Points to Remember About PLR

Here are a few other important points:

  • the facts as presented must be verified, and verifiable;
  • everyone has access to the same material, so use it in an original way;
  • the difference in quality between paid and free PLR is very slight, but;
  • paid PLR will mean less people have access to the text!

PLR articles (and other PLR works – video, templates, Lens kits, etc.) are a great way to get content fast. They're a great way to spark off ideas about a niche, and should be considered a starting point in a larger web project.

They're of most use, therefore, to affiliate marketers, and should not usually be used for material for article repositories unless the writer has the skills to create something truly unique from them.
