Google Wave is a communication platform designed to combine different forms of online communication like email, instant messaging, wikis, web chat and social networking.

Computer professionals may not be unaware that Google, the internet giant, had announced the launch of Google Wave, Google's new real-time communication platform, at the Google I/O conference in San Fransisco.

After many years of development work disguised under the codename “Walkabout,” Google Wave combines popular features from across the web — feeds, shared documents, photo galleries, videos, maps, and more.and is poised to redefine online communication.

To label Google Wave as just another social networking platform would be an unfair oversimplification. This latest product from Google, true to its name, will definitely send waves across the world of online communication and will be hailed as a new model for communication and collaboration on the Internet.

What Google Wave will do - Purpose of Google Wave

It may not be wrong to define Google Wave as a hybrid form of email system with many features including instant messaging. Two users can initiate an instant messaging session and this session can be archived as a conversation. Thereafter other friends can be roped in to join each wave or conversation.

Further, users can embed photos, documents and other multimedia in the stream of conversation. People can enter or exit at any time and the facility is there to track back the conversations using the playback feature

Advantages of Google Wave

Users of email, IM, micro-blogging, photo sharing, online collaboration tools and maps will no longer be required to use each one of them separately. With Google Wave, one can create a wave and add friends start communicating in real time with the help of richly formatted text, gadgets, photos and feeds from multiple other sources on the internet.

Google Wave is expected to take online communication by storm. The user would be able to watch other people in the wave type and edit, communicate, interact, and collaborate all at once in real time because of concurrent rich-text editing. Sounds incredible – but one can use audio, video, images, rich text simultaneously and all at once.

Valid Apprehensions About Google Wave

It is reported that Google intention is very ambitious as it wanted Google Wave to combine into one Facebook, Gmail, Twitter and Friendfeed. People are therefore understandably concerned about security and reliability with so much personal and critical information at stake.

It is a known fact that social networking sites are susceptible to virus attacks and other security threats. The onus is on Google Wave to store and manage extremely large volumes of sensitive data. The internet bandwidth requirements would also be much higher, limiting its use in many countries across the globe.
