While books provide a vast array of educational information, educational videos offer yet another learning experience and educational insight for students and teachers.
In the past, the educational resources available to students and teachers were somewhat limited. The Internet has opened up a whole new world for learning. With the Internet, a vast array of educational information is available with the simple click of the mouse. While traditional books and online books offer a plethora of information, educational videos provide valuable insight and another method of learning. Videos often provide an effective and engaging way of learning. Education comes alive with video!
The websites listed below provide many educational videos for students and educators at no cost.
Educational Video Sites Specifically for Teachers:
- VPW – Video Placement Worldwide provides free educational videos as well as printed materials for educators, librarians and organizations. Materials for all grade levels are included on the site, from elementary to college. The videos are available only to educators with valid school or educational organization addresses in the United States. Videos are shipped individually with each taking four to six weeks for delivery. As part of the Permanent Loan program, educators may keep the videos indefinitely. A short online survey is required.
- TeachersTV - Funded by the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), this website offers an online community for educators plus a wide variety of videos and classroom resources for elementary and secondary students.
- TeacherTube – Founded in 2007, TeacherTube is an online community for sharing of educational videos. Similar to the popular YouTube, the free site is dedicated to the professional development for educators. Students and teachers are encouraged to upload educational videos and comment on them.
- Discovery Education – A division of Discovery Communications, Discovery Education provides high-quality, digital-based learning to more than 35 million students and over 1 million educators. The award-winning Discovery Education Streaming section provides 9,000 full-length videos compatible with national and state standards. Many free classroom tools, including the PuzzleMaker and Lesson Plan Library, are invaluable resources for teachers. The Homework Help section is a great resource for parents.
- Learner Org– This website, from Annenberg Media, provides both educational videos and online television channel. Subjects include the arts, foreign language, literature , math, science and language arts. Workshops, free distance learning and various educational materials are also available for students in K-12 as well as the college level. View videos at no cost using the Video on Demand service or purchased DVDs or videotapes of the programs. Registration is required.
Educational Video Sites for Students and Parents:
- Video PBS – The award-winning PBS offers many programs for parents, teachers and children as well. From History Detectives and Podcasts, to NOVA and NATURE, Video PBS provides on-demand streaming of content. PBS also has a website devoted specifically to children, PBSKids.
- Internet Archive – This huge digital library is a one-stop-shop for audio, live music, text, and moving images. Thousands of broadcasts, cartoons, full-length films, movies and videos are available. Categories include arts and music, computers and technology, cultural and academic, ephemeral, non-English, open source and news. The Prelinger Archives includes over 2,000 films. The Wayback Machine includes over 150 billion web pages, archived since 1996. University lectures are also available from institutions in the US and China.
- Video NationalGeographic – National Geographic offers a wide variety of amazing educational resources for both teachers and students. Videos are categorized by animal, environment, music, travel, culture, kids and science and space. Enhance the classroom experience, by using one of several educator programs including the JASON Project, Giant Travelling Maps and Live events. Or combine education with adventure by using the Student Expeditions program.
- GreenEnergyTV – Founded in 2007 by Craig Zamary, Green Energy TV provides educational programming focusing on all things green. Categorized by subject matter, including solar energy, wind and hydro power, fuels, recycling, green building, geothermal and more, the videos are created by both professionals and non-professionals alike. Anyone can upload a video, although registration is required.
- EduTopia Org – Created by the George Lucas Educational Foundation, EduTopia was created for children, parents, teachers and administrators. The website also offers EduTopia magazine and EduTopia video, featuring over 150 videos. Members-only webinars are also available.
